Quickly Encrypt Files by Right Clicking Them

How can I quickly encrypt files by right clicking them?

Regularly, to encrypt a file or folder with EFS, you’d need to go to the properties of the file or folder and click on the Advanced button, as seen in the following article: What’s EFS?

You can tweak Explorer to have a new right-click add-on and thus to quicken your clicking. See it in the following screenshot:

When you choose to encrypt a file the following dialog appears:

To configure this tweak do the following:

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).

  2. Locate the following key in the registry:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

  1. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

    "EncryptionContextMenu"=dword:00000001

  2. Close the registry editor.

  3. No reboot is required.
