Please don’t disable IPv6 on SBS as you are likely to have Exchange issues!

Re: SBS 2008 DHCP Issue

SBS doesn’t “work” unless it is the DHCP server and the DNS. You could add the router as a secondary DNS for Internet access whilst the server is down. However, when the SBS comes back up, you would probably have to reboot the workstations to rehome their DNS to the SBS, once it’s running.

I also want to thank you for reminding me of the solution. It came just at the right time, when I needed to apply it to a client!

Re: WSUS Keeps crashing – SBS 2008/Standard FE

Tip: if you have never successfully run the WSUS cleanup wizard before, as you say it may run for hours. So uncheck all the options to cleanup then re-check only one. If that runs successfully, repeat for the next item, one at a time. Wash and repeat!

The easiest way to reset it IMHO is, if possible, take it out of the domain and reconnect it using http://conect

Then it is working the way it should. Do you really want them working from all kinds of “odd locations” where you are not sure that the computers thay are using are clean and comply with your organisation standards.
If you do, then issue them with USB keys that have the certificate installation package on them – a few clicks, but IMHO you are leaving yourself open to security and/or virus problems.

Re: Changing GPO’s on SBS2011, smart or not?

As a rule, I try not to change the default SBS group policies in groupt policy manager. At most, I un-link them and then link in new ones I have created. But sometimes, rules are made to be broken….

Re: DHCP server – static only

I hate to differ with my learned friends in this forum, but I can see a valid reason for handling the network this way.
1) No desktops need to be touched, it is all handled from the server
2) The DHCP effectively documents your “quasi-static” IP addresses
3) In “normal” situations, only authorised endpoints connect to your network – assuming no-one applies a sniffer and spoofs MAC addresses.
4) If there is a wireless access point, all the i-/smartphones in the building and outside proximity don’t get a free ride or jam up the network.

Just a thought :-!

Buying SBS is RIP since 1st January this year – even then it was only OEM since last July. Even so, it was SBS 2011, so why are you installing SBS 2008 anyway?

Re: cannot connect to sbs 2011 via remote desktop

Sorry for coming late to this thread, but I am just surprised no-one mentioned the SBS Console. Go to the Network/Connectivity tab and you have a dashboard of all your connectivity. Most important, IMHO, in the tasks on the RHS you have a “Fix My Network” wizard, which, usually, throws up any and all networking issues you may have.
Of course, if your problem is restrictions in the ports/addresses in your firewall, it won’t know, but at least you won’t waste your time “fixing” your server when it doesn’t need fixed.

Re: Exchange log files are very large – 45GB total – Is this bad?

For all this talk of backups, backups and Exchange logs, David, why not build a virtual machine somewhere and try a RESTORE. That way you will know if you have a valid backup or not.
After all, backups aren’t worth the disk space they are taking, if you cannot restore from them!

Re: SBS 2003 Admin account denied access

Renaming the Administrator account is a Windows Server best practice that doesn’t apply to SBS 2003. It is necessarily implemented in later versions, but for 2003 the admin account – aka the 500 account is necessary for full implementation.

There are only three problems with AD – DNS, DNS and DNS.
Have you checked and tested your DNS?

Re: Can I disable/delete WSUS database?

You can also start the WSUS admin console and under options you will find a Server Cleanup Wizard. There are a number of check marks there which help you clean up your database and reduce the footprint on your disks.
For at least the first time that you run this wizard, i would suggest you untick all the boxes and run them one at a time. Even that can take quite a while. Then run this wizard on a regular basis.

Re: Domain controller with 2 member servers – How to rebuild DC

What Ossian has given you is the general method for replacing a DC (without Exchange). You need to reinstall SBS2K11 and the best method by far is the swing method from sbsmigration.com.

Re: SBS 2k11 Backup

I don’t know why this happens, but I have had it happen to me also. You have one disk with full backups. So maybe you can reinitialize the other three and carry on. They will pick up the full server again on the first backup. Since all backups after the first are incremental, you’ll hardly be missing anything.

Not sure what you mean. Backups are backups and reports are reports (or monitoring).

There are updates that do that for you. There is a BPA which flags that for you. Have you run updates? Have you installed WSUS? Have you run BPA?

Don’t forward DNS to router. POint it at ISP’s DNS or leave it blank and use root hints.

Re: Simple SBS 2003 network fails internet connectivity

Does this SBS have one NIC or 2? Re-run the connect to Internet (CEICW) Wizard. Make sure that workstations are pointing to the correct gateway (1 NIC=router, 2 NICs=SBS) and that allstations are pointing to the SBS as DNS.

Re: DNS Warning

Does your Gateway/Firewall allow access to the Internet correctly? Do the stations resolve DNS queries to the Internet correctly? Try “nslookup” from a command prompt to see if names resolve correctly.
As has already been mentioned (I think) try runing the BPA.
