in reply to: DS10 not booting just 6 error beeps #360178

Re: DS10 not booting just 6 error beeps

    Hi,

I have tried it with no ram and the error beeps change to 7 beeps, which from the manual indicates a memory mismatch. The cpu may be faulty but my hunch is that one of the main bga chips on the motherboard may be at fault, which is why i will try reballing and then reflowing the main ic’s with the reflow machine (Jovy rework station) that i have access to.

Re: DS10 not booting just 6 error beeps

    Hi thanks for the reply.

I have tried a working pair of ram modules from a working DS10 but still the same.

I have also tried a bios reset but I still get the same error beeps.

When testing the unit I have just the motherboard (removed from the unit), psu, switch (to turn the unit on), ram, speaker (to hear the error beeps) and case fans (unit turns off straight away if the fans are not connected). I have tried testing with a vt terminal connected to com 1 and also with a pci vga card, but always the same 6 error beeps.

My next step will be to try reflowing the 3 x bga chips on the motherboard using a reflow machine.

I will keep you posted with the results.

    Cheers,

    Nick

Re: IBM Server will not power on

I believe the fru for the power cage is 24R2560.
There is one currently on ebay for $360 (a lot more than i paid for my x236 power cage).

The first post states the server is not under warranty.

Re: IBM Server will not power on

Hi, I have had this problem with an IBM X236 server, where the power cage was faulty and caused the server to appear dead. The power cage I purchased wasn’t too expensive either, about £30 from a local supplier.

Re: My hard disk has passed Short DST and failed Long DST of SeaTools, do the hard di

    Hi,

The program ghost4unix is open source and free to download.
Symantec Ghost and Acronis would need to be purchased unless using a trial version as mentioned earlier.

    Hi,

If the hard drive has failed the Seagate diagnostics then it is failing.
It is most likely that there are surface errors on part of the disk and that is why certain files are unreadable.

Personally I would look to clone the drive to a new hard disk.
There are lots of programs that do this like Symantec Ghost, Acronis, etc.
A good free program that I use is ghost4unix.

in reply to: Restore a Ghost image locally on a hdd using ramdisk. #360171

Re: Restore a Ghost image locally on a hdd using ramdisk.

Just thought I would let everyone know that I have solved my problem.
It just required me researching a bit more on using Win AIK/WinPE.
I created a WinPe image with Ghost 11 included.
The iso was then burned to a standard ide hdd via a usb to ide converter.
The 3 different ghost images were copied to the drive.
The user can now boot from the hdd into ramdisk and use ghost to choose the relevant image, before restoring over the drive.

    Re: Dead 2600 Router

    Hi Andy,

I look after Cisco 837 routers for my company and I have had to reload the Cisco IOS (bin file) a few times.
I have seen the out of memory error message when trying to load a file to the router that is bigger than the size of the flash of the router.
With regard to the weird characters this may be because you have changed the port speed from the default 9600. Do you see any Cisco messages on the screen when you first turn on the router? (or just weird characters?)
Also what did you type when you changed the confreg?

    Regards,

    Nick

Hi, just registered and I’m impressed by all the areas covered by this forum.
No questions yet, just checking out all the Cisco entries!
