    Hi Michael

Looks like you have DP’s Enhanced Incremental Backup option enabled. Is there any specific reason you are running this option?

There has been a little bit of talk around the web from people who are not impressed with the additional disk space it requires to run this feature, if you do not actually need it, turn it off.

    Regards

    Re: Migrate winSBS2003 to winSBS2003 !!! help

To further reinforce the point, I, just 3 or 4 weeks ago completed a full SBS 2003 migration from one old SBS 2003 server to a new SBS2003 R2 Premium box, using Swing migration.

Just buy it, it works…and there are people who use this method who are experts in the field.

Re: Adding Exchange to a SBS 2003

Teiger’s advice is very safe, I like it! I used Swing migration this weekend to move my current sbs2003 install to a brand new server, besides a few problems with OWA, I was very happy to have my environment backup and running in no time at all.

Re: Moving exchange on its own box in SBS 2003 Environment…

Another thing to consider would be the licensing costs of putting Exchange on a different server. It would more than likely to be cheaper to repair/upgrade/replace your exisiting server than go down the route of a standalone exchange server, especially when you start talking about additional CAL’s etc.

What’s currently wrong with your server?

Re: Mail problems after swing migration

Will try that once I put the server back online.

One thing, when I used the ICW, it asked for my ISP’s DNS settings, which I put in. The thing is, I don’t think the ICW was ever run on the current (old) server. I looked at the config.vbs file but it does not seem to have any settings in there.

Is there anywhere else I can look?

Re: Mail problems after swing migration

Guys – where in SBS would I check to see what network settings Exchange is using to send/receive mail ? I am thinking if I replicate the settings between the old and new servers, everything will work as it should.

Currently, the old server only has 1 network connection specified, which uses itself as the DNS server and the firewall’s internal address for the gateway. I set this up on the new server, I could connect to the internet and send mail, but could not receive mail.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks for your reply

Yes I did run the wizard and still no luck getting external mail to come through.

I have bought the official SBS swing migration pack so will drop Jeff a line, I was just hoping it was going to be something glaringly obvious.

    Thanks for the response.

I think I may not have waited long enough for replication to occur. Yes I did buy the kit (well the guy who was in this job previously did) however I can’t find out the registration details, annoying.

Looks like I am going to have to go back and start again.

    Thanks for your help.

    Re: Swing SBS Migration problems

Further to this, I ran some of the fixes implemented in the KB that I posted a link to in my first post and seem to have come up with some interesting results when running netdiag /fix

For example, the domain membership/DC discovery and the like failed, even though the server holds these roles

Server “pms001” knows about 5 roles
    Schema – CN=NTDS Settings,CN=PMS001,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site-Name,CN=Sit
    es,CN=Configuration,DC=mydomain,DC=local
    Domain – CN=NTDS Settings,CN=PMS001,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site-Name,CN=Sit
    es,CN=Configuration,DC=mydomain,DC=local
    PDC – CN=NTDS Settings,CN=PMS001,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site-Name,CN=Sites,
    CN=Configuration,DC=mydomain,DC=local
    RID – CN=NTDS Settings,CN=PMS001,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site-Name,CN=Sites,
    CN=Configuration,DC=mydomain,DC=local
    Infrastructure – CN=NTDS Settings,CN=PMS001,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site-Nam
    e,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=mydomain,DC=local

Here is the log of running netdiag /fix

Yes – it is an OEM, only for distribution with new server license.

I spoke to Dell briefly this afternoon and they are getting back to me, but all indications are that we are screwed. Which means I will now have to go out and buy Exchange as well.

Not looking forward to the migration…

At least you have an appreciating asset Biggles ! I will be doing the same when I return home (Perth) from London, mind you housing prices have gone through the roof of WA, not a good thing for a 1st home buyer.

Speaking of toys, I am thinking about getting a PSP, used the location free tv on one yeterday at work, absolutely brilliant.

Yes the old hp/fuel issue. My last Nissan back in Oz made a little over 350hp at the wheels, when that thing was on song it would drink fuel like no mans business, that being said, a 50L tank would get me up to 550ks on a long highway drive.

I want to buy a really nice plasma tv, at work we have a heap of 52″ Sony Bravia’s, makes me sad to go home to my 34cm tube tv.

Re: SBS to W2K3 Enterprise. Layout suggestions [title change by Biggles77]

I do realise this, but the outgoing IT Manager has specced this out and unfortunately decided to not go down the SBS path, I dont know why, maybe the old “being technical for the sake of being technical”.

If the servers have not been migrated when I start, I might discuss returning the current copies of the software and getting sbs instead, which would possibly work out cheaper as well.

    Thanks Biggles.

User wise, we are only talking around 30 and a greater majority of those are just working using Filemaker, so not a tremendous amount of load for these new servers. It is unlikely that the company will grow too much larger in the next year or so.

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking of server virtualisation as well, but for such a small company, it almost seems like being technical for the sake of it?

Is this happening on the same PC each time? Have you tried other PC’s? Could be a fault with the default user profile on that particular PC.

Sounds like a permissions problem. As the PC’s apparently are in a workgroup, what are the permissions on the shared printer? Do you have same user accounts with same usernames and passwords on each machine? As Biggles said, more informtaion wouod be great.

Just an idea – are there any stray records pointing incorrectly in the hosts file?

    Also, from technet:

Add the A record for the domain controller with the ipconfig /registerdns command. Flush the DNS cache on the computer running the Active Directory Installation Wizard by using the ipconfig /flushdns command.

    Best of luck

This thread is exactly what I am going through at the moment. We are migrating users to a new building, the lan is now going to have different subnets per floor (rather than different physical sites) and I want to implement a similar strategy. Alvin, can you possibly let us know a link to the Technet page you found this script?

I was thinking the easiest way around this would be just to write a small batch file per floor using the con2prt utility in the old Zero Admin kit and then getting users to run it via an email link.
