I have so much ancient XP software I thought I would try installing dear old XP on a spare tower, but no sound works. Also no Internet connection, in fact it failed to ask for the BT password etc

Check in Device Manager for missing drivers (network, audio, possibly others). Identify the make/model of hardware and go online (on a different computer) to see if there are still drivers available. Download to a USB stick (or you may have to burn to a CD-ROM if USB drivers are missing) and install them.

If you “spare tower” has a driver CD, use that instead

    Had you considered virtualisation?
