I will be upgrading my domain from 2003 R2 x86 to Windows 2008 R2 x64 and want to make sure I have all the steps down. Currently I have two 2003 R2 x86 DCs. DC01 and DC02. I do not have a spare server to add to the domain as a fresh 2008 R2 install and since 2008 R2 is x64 only I will have to demote DC02 and rebuild as 2008 R2. Here are the steps I have.
1) raise domain functional level to Windows 2003
2) raise forest functional level to Windows 2003
3) run netdiag,dcdiag,repadmin and check for errors
4) Make sure all roles are on DC01
5) demote DC02
6) rebuild DC02 as Windows 2008 R2 (w/same IP as it originally had)
7) on DC01 run adprep /forestprep from 2008 R2 cd
8) on DC01 run adprep /domainprep from 2008 R2 cd
9) run DCpromo on DC02
10) move roles from DC01 to DC02
11) demote DC01
12) rebuild DC01 as Windows 2008 R2
13) run dcpromo on DC01Any suggestions or just a conformation that i have everything listed correctly is appreciated. Thanks.

—-> make a full backup of the system state of both servers
1) raise domain functional level to Windows 2003
2) raise forest functional level to Windows 2003
3) run netdiag,dcdiag,repadmin and check for errors
4) Make sure all roles are on DC01
5) demote DC02
6) rebuild DC02 as Windows 2008 R2 (w/same IP as it originally had)
—-> 7) on DC01 run adprep32 /forestprep from 2008 R2 cd
—-> on DC01 run adprep32 /rodcprep
—-> on DC01 run adprep32 /domainprep from 2008 R2 cd
9) run DCpromo on DC02
10) move roles from DC01 to DC02
11) demote DC01
12) rebuild DC01 as Windows 2008 R2
13) run dcpromo on DC01It looks OK to me.. you did not talk about DNS/DHCP/DFS and FSMO roles.. make sure you also got that figured out…good luck

I planned to take backups for some reason I forgot to include it in the steps.
Thanks for correcting me on the adprep32. I only need to run adprep32 /rodcprep if I plan on having a RODC domain controller right? As of right now I have no plans for that. Could I just run it in the future if the need comes up?
“you did not talk about DNS/DHCP/DFS and FSMO roles”
FSMO roles were step 4. Making sure all roles were on DC01 and then again in step 10 moving them to the new 2008 R2 server. That is the same for the GC.
DNS will be on each server. I don’t believe i have to do anything with DNS. I am using AD-integrated DNS. I have no DFS or DHCP in this domain.

You’re plan looks okay to me.
If you’re utilizing WINS for any legacy systems then you can look at the new Global Names Zone feature in DNS.
Also don’t forget your first 2008 Domain Controller needs to be a Global Catalog server (just thought I’d mention that as it’s not in your plan)

We just recently did the upgrade at my work, with those exact same steps as outlined like bio. All went smooth.
Good luck with your upgrade…:beer:

I’m going to start this today. I’ve had a hell of a time installing 2008 R2 with the Dell DRAC. Thanks for the replies.

One more thing should i be running adprep32 /domainprep /gpprep also?

Gpprep is only necessary when going from Win2K not from W2K3. Basically the gpprep just resets permissions on the default GPO folders in Sysvol, provided the Default Domain Policy and the Default Domain Controllers GPO were not altered.

Also, make sure to have sufficient time to let things sync in the domain.
