The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

[email protected] on 10/28/2004 11:14 AM

There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient’s email server. Please contact your system administrator.

sometimes he can send the mail to [email protected] and some other times he can’t, no change in configuration.

The server is windows 2003 sp1 with exchange 2003 + McAfee groupshield. Any ideas

Is this message generated ONLY on emails to this domain? No other domains?

If that is the case, then I would suspect that the remote server has an issue with your domain.
The reason the recipient can reply to email messages is because the remote server knows that the message originated from inside. New email messages are being blocked.

As for the cause, there are various.
The first thing I would suggest is put your domain in to dnsreport.com and see if it flags any errors. If it does, then you need to get those fixed.

If possible I would see if you can get hold of the administrators for this domain and ask them why new email that originates from your server is being blocked. They should be able to look in the logs to see why it was rejected.

    dear Sembee,

if what you said are right then how can more than 200 users send new e-mail out said the company.. the problem only related to one or two user.

    Today I made a test:
1- I let the user login to ” OWA – Outlook Web Access”
2- send e-mails from his contact list

what I notices that he can send e-mails without having the “SMTP” message. However, when he try to send from MS outlook he got the “SMTP” message..

    it is really strange..

I was thinking that may be Groupshield has to do something in blocking but when the user can send from his OWA then their is no problem in the groupshield.

Also, I try to access the dnsreport.com and I got this message
WARNING: You are using a web proxy that is currently being abused by malware. Please go here for more details. The web proxy IP is ********.

If the remote company has an issue with your domain, then it wouldn’t affect them in any way. It would only be affecting you.

These ” 200 users” are you referring to your users or users in the company that you are trying to email?

There should be no difference when the email is sent from OWA and when it is sent from Outlook. However, when sending the email from Outlook, what format are you using? HTML? Rich Text? Plain Text? Certain sites can have issues with that.

As for the web proxy issue, that is something that you need to take up with the people who run the ISP or proxy server that you are using.

    Re: smtp;550 Denied by policy

    dear Simon,

    200 users????
what I mean is that I am the administrator of exchange in company XXX that has more than 200 employee.. and one or two employee are facing the “SMTP” problem.

I have to check what type of format the user using in sending e-mail and I will let you know..

I still believe that it is a McAfee problem regarding SPAM or Mass Mailer.. but until now I do not have any prove to this…

I hope I can solve this problem soon because its becoming annoying

    Re: smtp;550 Denied by policy

If you think that it is an applicaiton that you are running that is causing the problem, then there should be logs within the application that tell you it is rejecting the message.

Turn on Message Tracking. This will tell you what Exchange is doing with the message and whether delivery was attempted to an external server or not.

    just a thougt…
also check you’re mcafee policies and disable the mass mailer option.
Currently i don’t have mcafee in front of me, but i’m sure its there in vshield 8.

although normally it would affect the complete organisation…. :-?

    hi..

I found a solution but it is not the right one..

I went to the use and login to his PC with the administrator account then I change his profile need to user.old and let him login again to the PC. The windows XP create a new profile for him then I open outlook and test the sending and it send without having the SMTP message.

This is mean something to you guys because I could not figure what was the problem.
