I’m doing a SBS 2011 Migration to new hardware by installing SBS 2011 on the new hardware in migration mode.
While I’m waiting for the Exchange Public Folders to replicate (zzzzzzzzzzzz…) I was wondering:
the old Exchange 2010 was at SP3 – the new Exchange is SP1. When do I update the new server to SP3? Before or after mailbox migrations?
I would have installed Exchange 2010 SP3 as soon as the first round of patching was done.
Straight out of the box – install Windows 2008 R2 SP1, reboot, next is Exchange 2010 SP3, reboot. Then run Microsoft Update. Only once that is complete would I run the wizards or move any data.
You should do it before you start moving data, while you can go down versions, it isn’t something that is advised.
Once the initial install has completed, I usual do all the updates…SP3 + latest Rollup Update. Don’t forget to force it to check online (WU) as there will be whole new set it install when it downloads them in a few days…
