So I have a domain under Win Server 2003 Standard. I wanted a backup system state on the server using the Windows backup utility. put everything in order and press the button to start backup. However, after 10 seconds, the error and in Report appears the following

    Quote:
    Backup Status
    Operation: Backup
    Active backup destination: File
    Media name: “domain.bkf created 2.2.2010 at 10:56”

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy: 0x800706be.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:The remote procedure call failed.

    Aborting Backup.

The operation did not successfully complete.

I was looking at the internet and found something

    Quote:
    cd %systemroot%system32
    net stop vss
    net stop swprv
    regsvr32 ole32.dll
    regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
    Vssvc /Register
    regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
    regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
    regsvr32 es.dll
    regsvr32 stdprov.dll
    regsvr32 vssui.dll
    regsvr32 msxml.dll
    regsvr32 msxml3.dll
    regsvr32 msxml4.dll

Then, try reboot the server to see how it goes.

If any DLL cannot be registered, you can try rebooting the server and then try registering that DLL again.

but nothing. Can someone give me advice on what to do that I could make an backup system state
    Thank you

That server is a Domain controler? Is it a 32 bit system. Have you installed the lates Service Packs and all patches?

Make sure that the services: ‘Remote Procedure Call (RPC)’ and ‘Removable Storage’ ARE both set to Automatic. And ‘RPC Locator Service’, ‘MS Software Shadow Copy Provider’ and ‘Volume Shadow Copy’ are NOT set to Automatic under Services.

yes the server is the domain controller. the OS is 64bit. the OS have the SP1.’Remote Procedure Call (RPC)’ and ‘Removable Storage’ ARE both set to Automatic. ‘MS Software Shadow Copy Provider’ and ‘Volume Shadow Copy’ are set to Manual under Services. for ‘RPC Locator Service’, i don’t know. i will see it.

Re: problem with the vss or the ntbackup

Are you starting the backup while logged in as the Administrator, or using the Administrator credentials to authenticate the backup?

Does the server have any other roles apart from being a DC?

Re: problem with the vss or the ntbackup

Sorry, what I meant was does the server fulfill any other roles apart from a DC – sharepoint, file-server etc. I’ve seen some articles relating to this error when a server has been part of a cluster or has MOSS installed.

I would try the patch as is.

Not much difference in the code for Standard and Enterprise.

Re: problem with the vss or the ntbackup

    Have you read the document???

There is a line that states View and request hotfix downloads did you click on it to take you to the request page and request the appropriate hotfix for your system.

BTW the english version of Windows Server 2003 x64 is there.

I won’t post any links as i’m not going to do your job for you.

    Good luck
