I just started some work with an exchange 2003 server with SBS. I noiticed their option was greyed for recover deleted Items. So in the exchange manager, I changed the dates to retain 21 days for emails, and 30 days for mailboxes. I also checked do not delete until a back up has been made.

Now the option is selectable in Outlook 2003 as expected, but the window is always completely empty. Any ideas how to trouble shoot this? I tried to search, but everything pointed to what i have already done, which is change the number of days on the properties limits tab for the store. But regardless of what number is in it, the window to recover mail is blank.

Your changes won’t recover back the old deleted stuff. Your countdown starts now for stuff your users might delete in the future.

Have you restarted the store after making the change? In some cases that is required.

Yeah if you just set the recover options in system manager then as mentioned it starts the countdown from that point on. Your best bet is to go from a system backup, depending on your backup software will depend on how you recover those items.

If you cannot recover them then why did they delete them? ;)

I checked the “recover items” using OWA and it works fine, but for some reason, it doesn’t work while using Outlook 2003. So the rention settings are working but for some reason, not while using Outlook. Right now, if they want to recover they must use OWA. Anyone have any other ideas?
