Curious as I am I noticed today that Exchange 2007 won’t be supported on Windows 2008 R2.

But what I start asking myself was why… Is the technology so much different between 2008 and 2008 R2?

Officially, it’s “technical issues”. I suspect though those issues are there to… “encourage” migration to Exchange 2010.

I have read blog entries etc from people who have managed to get Exchange 2007 running on 2008 R2 by copying the missing libraries from a 2008 server – naturally though, don’t expect Microsoft to provide any support if you do manage to get it to work.

Sure it might be possible, but of course you will loose the support of Microsoft.
    I found it a bit weird simply because Windows 2008 R2 isn’t re-invented technology…

What I understand from what I’ve read is that 2008 R2 isn’t “just a few more tools” as was the case with 2003 R2. Meh. If I can’t put R2 on our mail server, it just means one less late night at the office

    Yes that’s true either.
But ok, I believe it isn’t a few more tools, but is the difference that big then (except the extra tools)?

They’re going down the mobile phone route eh?

You know… I actually made a phone call with mine the other day.

    I know!

As one of the Exchange MVPs, I can tell you this has been raised and it is being discussed.
I cannot really tell you much more than that due to my NDA.

However, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

Exchange 2000 didn’t work on Windows 2003. In many people’s eyes there were not many changes between Windows 2000 and 2003. You could get it to work (by in place upgrading Windows) but it wasn’t a supported solution and broke quite quickly.

Windows 2008 R2 has major changes under the hood, which cannot be seen. In most cases the problems are with changes to IIS.

Re: No Exchange 2007 support On Windows 2008 R2

Trying to get my head round this. Exchange 2007 is supported on Server 2008, but not 2008 R2. Does this only apply to 2008 R2 on the Exchange Server I.e can I have 2008 R2 DCs/Servers and run Exchange 2007 on a 2008 member server?

I’m not greatly surprised except that this has very much been kept under the radar. Simon, I don’t know if you can tell us or not, is it likely that this issue will be resolved?

This only applies to the Exchange servers – you can run R2 on your DCs and other member servers.

It hasn’t been kept under the radar on purpose because Windows 2008 R2 is not a released product. The technical release date is not for another couple of months – even though people will be getting their hands on it very soon. The compatibility lists are still being finalised. The Exchange team might well test it and decide that it can be supported. Unfortunately under the terms of my NDA, I cannot say anything else.

Remember there is a lot going on with Exchange at the moment. Exchange 2007 SP2 is due very soon now, and Exchange 2010 is very close to completion. The Exchange team also have the rollups that are being issued at regular intervals for Exchange 2007. Then there is the issue with Exchange 2007 SP2 and SBS 2008 which is being looked at as well. Lots of things going on right now.

Cool, thanks for the extra info. We were holding off on our Exchange 2003 migration until 2K8 R2 came out, might now be waiting till Exchange 2010 is out.

It appears that MS have listened to us all & will now be issuing an updte for Exchange 2007 to support Win2K8 R2

There is lots of noise about this at the moment.
It is important to note that the support is not there right now – you cannot install Exchange 2007 on to Windows 2008 R2 today (6th November 2009) and it works correctly. It is likely to require a further update, probably a rollup that needs to be applied to the installation source.

Re: No Exchange 2007 support On Windows 2008 R2

Resurrecting this thread, on the grounds that something might have changed in the last 6 months….
I have built a new 2008R2 Enterprise server for backups (Backup Exec 2010) and, to cover my Exchange 2007 SP2 server, I need to install the Exchange Management Tools on it

Any workarounds (apart from waiting for SP3 ) — a straight SP2 install fails with “incompatible OS”, although SP1 seems (at this moment) to be installing without problems

Re: No Exchange 2007 support On Windows 2008 R2

Rebuild the machine to Windows 2008 is the only work around.
