    hi,

my exch env has 2003 and 2007 in the same org.
we are shifting 2003 mbox to 2007.

some of our users have msExchRecipLimit flag equal to 50 users send.
when they try to send to over 50 users, and also if they try to sent to a DL group then they recieve an NDR.

    this works fine.

but when we moved several of this users to 2007, they could send to over 50 (unlimited recipients) no matter if the msExchRecipLimit is still 50.

i have read that if the mbox is in ex2003, then the expantion of the DL group members are deal when the message is being enveloped, while if the mbox is in ex2007, the expansion does not occured (by design) thus, the DL Group is accounted as 1, no matter how many members are in the group.

in EMC 2007 there is a global default setting for Max recipients = 5000.
if i change this it will apply to all users – i do not what that.

is there any option/solution, that the msExchRecipLimit will be accomplished even with DL groups?

    moti.

Not that I am aware of.
This was a change in behaviour of Exchange 2007 which was requested by many people.

    thanks, simon.

but it is strange that a usefull feature, that the members of a DL group are not accounted when you try to deny a typical user from sending to a large amount of reciepients.

I can only guess that more people wanted it the other way round.

Certainly counting a list as a single recipient makes more sense to me. If you don’t want users sending to large distribution groups, set restrictions on the groups, not the number of recipients.

    Re: msExchRecipLimit

the problem is that i deal with students, and i have around 25000 of them.
and i have arount 2000 DL.

with ex2003, when the user’s property max recipient limit was around 50, i could manage that the user is not able to send over 50 recipients, even if he choosed a DL, because the expantion of the DL was during envelope construction.

but with ex2007, the expantion occures after the envelope construction, thus the DL is considers as a single entity.
, and here is my problem.

when you mention restict in the DL, where can it be achieved?

I don’t even think transport rules would help because it is,as you say, a single recipient during message submission.
Maybe you can look at locking down the users that can send to the large groups instead? You can use transport rules to restrict them to less than 50 recipients and have the DLs restricted to certain users. If they shouldn’t be sending to more than 50 recipients then why do they have access to the groups in the first place, is the angle I would come from.
