    Hey all,

Just a quick question really to see if anyone has any tips or recommendations on moving our exchange 2003 server to new hardware. I have been looking at this on various sites and what I have found is to use the disaterr ecovery switch and restore the server that way.

The old server is still up and running but getting old so want to move it to a nice new Hp Server. I am going to backup the server using Veritas and restore using it too via a tape drive. I know about the drive names and install paths need to be the same but is there anything I need to bear in mind? I have seen the below link so far and wondered if there was anything else to look out for?

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997176(EXCHG.65).aspx

The server is running 2000 Advance server.

    Many thanks for any replies.

I’ve used that method numerous times with no trouble, it works like a charm. Just make sure to follow the directions EXACTLY.

The backup/restore method is very high risk. Once you have started it, you cannot back out if something goes wrong.

If you have new hardware, then do a swing migration instead. Zero risk, zero downtime. Done correctly there is no impact on the users at all.

i’m gonna throw it out there.

Since you’re migrating to new hardware anyway, why not consider Server 2008 with Exchange 2007 (or 2010)

64bit platform, and a fair bit more future proofing. some definite learning curve from Ex03-> ex07 though

    Thanks for replies guys!

We bought the new server along with a copy of windows 2008 and then realized that 2003 exchange cant run on 2008 server and we cant afford to upgrade exchange at the moment.

    Sad I know.

    Thanks for info!

you might be able to get your Server 2008 licence downgraded to Server 2003, at least then you can stop using Server 2000, which became EOSL about 2 years back

Re: Moving Exchange 2003 to new hardware

    Hi all,

Quick question on public folders. Is there a way to move them to a new store at all? We have a bad mail store which I have moved everyone out of to new stores but the public folders are still there but its the first storage group I think and not sure if you can move them?

Anyone able to give me some suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Simon

Add a replica on a new server, wait for them to replicate, and then remove the replicas on the original server once everything is in synch.

    Hi,

Thanks for reply, I am moving the exchange server to new hardware so will only have one online at a time. Can I move them any other way before I back the old server up?

    Thanks,
    Si

Re: Moving Exchange 2003 to new hardware

As Sembee stated, that is a very high risk way of doing things. You have 2 servers available as you have purchased new hardware, so why not do a swing migration which has zero risk and migrate the public folders through replication?
