    Hi,

On my own SBS 2003 I have something weird.

After the daily mailbox management, I see the following in the e-mail :

The Microsoft Exchange Server Mailbox Manager has completed processing mailboxes
    Started at: 2008-04-28 05:09:13
    Stopped at: 2008-04-28 05:09:19
    Mailboxes processed: 19
Messages that would be moved or deleted: 17
Size of messages that would be moved or deleted: 498.00 KB

I would expect something like what a client of mine has, with the exact same settings :

The Microsoft Exchange Server Mailbox Manager has completed processing mailboxes
    Started at: 2008-04-27 23:09:12
    Completed at: 2008-04-27 23:09:16
    Mailboxes processed: 17
    Messages moved: 20
Size of moved messages: 9.83 MB
    Deleted messages: 12
Size of deleted messages: 211.00 KB

The messages are deleted, I have checked this, and when I rerun mailbox management, I get this :

The Microsoft Exchange Server Mailbox Manager has completed processing mailboxes
    Started at: 2008-04-28 17:58:43
    Stopped at: 2008-04-28 17:58:48
    Mailboxes processed: 19
Messages that would be moved or deleted: 0
Size of messages that would be moved or deleted: 0.00 KB

    Which makes sense.

    Why do I get :
Messages that would be moved or deleted: 17
Size of messages that would be moved or deleted: 498.00 KB

    instead of
    Deleted messages: 17
Size of deleted messages: 498.00 KB

    ???

My server is SBS 2003 R2, my client has the previous, SBS 2003.

Mailbox Management is set to report only, not to do the action. If you want it to delete the content you need to change the option on the properties of the server in ESM.

No, sorry, but you are wrong.

    I typed this :

The messages are deleted, I have checked this, and when I rerun mailbox management, I get this :

The Microsoft Exchange Server Mailbox Manager has completed processing mailboxes
    Started at: 2008-04-28 17:58:43
    Stopped at: 2008-04-28 17:58:48
    Mailboxes processed: 19
Messages that would be moved or deleted: 0
Size of messages that would be moved or deleted: 0.00 KB

    Which makes sense.

    In short :
I have checked that the messages do get deleted and when I re-run the job it reports there is nothing more to delete.

I have only ever seen “would be” when the server is set to report only. I have never seen it report while actually making the changes.

I can only guess that the DLL that generates the messages is corrupt, but I have no idea which DLL it is – only Microsoft could answer that.

I have just found the solution.

    I have 2 Recepient Policies.
The standard “Default Policy” and 1 that I created, called “Mel’s policies”.

I left the “Default Policy” alone, all it has is the domain names for e-mail addresses, I have not put any mailbox manager settings in this one.

I put my filter rule and mailbox manager settings in “Mel’s policies” and set the “When processing a mailbox” to “Move to deleted items folder”.

This policy “Mel’s policies” works for the mailboxes defined in the filter, but like I mentioned, the reporting was not correct.

I have changed “When processing a mailbox” to “Move to deleted items folder” in the “Default Policy” too now, and although there is nothing defined in Mailbox Manager Settings, the reporting is okay now :-)

I guess most people only use 1 recepient policy.
