Hyperv virtual machines, accumulate rct and mrt files. I am aware that these are a new addition to Windows Sever 2016 Hyper-V, that allows the tracking of changes between backup operations. I’m concerned that they will be taking up a lot of storage space.

If I shutdown the VM and delete snapshots then these files disappear.

However, I noticed that there are no vhdx files being saved as they should be, instead rct & mrt files are being created !!!

    Any help much appreciated.

Sites found using Google confirm these file types under 2016, but your comment about missing VHDX files doesn’t make any sense. VHDX files are the disk drive files for any VM. Have a look at the settings for any VM you have defined, and see what path is given for any disc drive, IDE or SCSI, for that VM. You’ve got VHD or VHDX files, somewhere.
