    Hello.

Is there a way to block certain websites on my computer while i am Behind ISA Proxy Server?

I am not willing to use a third party software to block those websites.

Do you want to block entire domains or just certain sections/pages within a given domain?

Actually, no you didn’t mention that in your first post.

If you’re in a workgroup then presumably you don’t have a DNS server setup?

Re: how to block certain websites on ISA Client in XP

So, do YOU have access to log on to the ISA server, or does your cable provider not give you that?

Because if you can log on to your ISA server, then yes, you can just block websites using ISA – in fact that’s a pretty commonly used functionality.

If you don’t have access, you should be able to ask the cable provider to do it.

Who manages the ISA server — you or your ISP?

What if I am in a domain environment ?

Suppose, I am a domain Client (Server 2003 DC) + ISA 2006 Client. But I am not a Server Adminsitrator.

Now What can i do to remove certain websites only on client side without informing the Network Administrator. :D

Re: how to block certain websites on ISA Client in XP

So you want to do this without the permission of your system administrator?

First step, speak to your IT staff and get permission to do this.

Once you have permission, while you can achieve this at the client level, this takes a huge amount of work (manually adding each subdomain to block to the hosts file of each computer) to implement and maintain. Instead, it could be done using DNS which would be a far more elegant solution.

The best way however would be to use ISA to block the sites if you’re able to do so.

I can’t not access the ISA Server and Don’t want to tell anything about blocking the websites to the ISA Administrator.

Hosts file method does not work with on ISA Client.
    C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetchosts

How to do this via DNS ?

    Via DNS – Google it?

Again, I must recommend that you speak to your IT department and get permission before proceeding.

So tell the ISP to give you access to the ISA server

I do not like the way this thread has progressed from Post #3. It seems obvious that the OP is wanting help in bypassing a setup by the ISA Administrators. As always, we will NOT assist Members to bypass any security measures setup in their workplace unless they have direct Administrative access to the Server and need guidance with a security implementation.

This above quote concerns me greatly. Unless the OP can provide a credible reason why further assistance should be provided, I would be very careful in providing further directions to achieve his goal in collecting his “handsome amount of money“.

This also goes for members who attempt to get us to provide answers to school projects that they have been given.

SIR, I can understand your concerns but believe me i am a positive mind person. In our area there are local cable net providers who use ISA Proxy server. At the client side we are Local administrator of our PCs, we have complete Admin Rights to our computer.

There are many reasons to block some websites at our homes.
    Pornography
    Gambling

What is the security threat if we want to protect our systems by blocking some websites, Does it break any rule?

We use Internet Explorer and Firefox for web browsing. Whats wrong if we disable some of the functionality via GPO or other methods.

I was just asking how to block certain websites on my PC

Re: how to block certain websites on ISA Client in XP

    We’ve told you.

Either, you can speak to the ISP who controls the ISA server, and ask them to block it.

Alternately, you could install and configure your own firewall at the edge of your network, say, Squid, and use that to filter accordingly.

However, the ONLY way you can acheive what you want, without installing software, is to speak to the ISP.
If you don’t want to install software, OR speak to the ISP, then you are completely out of luck.

Our concerns come from the fact that you’ve stated that you don’t want the administrator of whatever system you’re doing this on to know about it.

Re: how to block certain websites on ISA Client in XP

    The task has been done…!!

    Solution.

    For Mozilla Firefox.

    BlockSite Addon (Free)
This addon has a capability to import text file to block unwanted websites. This also allow * Wildcard entries to block subdomain / website links.
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/blocksite/

    For Internet Explorer

Microsoft has given a feature of CONTENT ADVISOR through which we can easily block / allow different websites.

Thank you for your great support.

Brilliant, you’ve fixed it by doing exactly what you told us you didn’t want to do in your first post and used a third-party addon.

Sorry if I misunderstood what you were trying to do but I was confused by your above quote stating you wanted to remove certain sites, youtube and facebook perhaps from the blocking.

Hehe…! I said about third party software not for addon

Btw, The IE method does not required a third party addon , Now you can’t challenge that statement….

Re: how to block certain websites on ISA Client in XP

Keep in mind that by blocking sites at the client level, you may well find that users are able to bypass these restrictions.

For instance, local administrators could disable your restrictions, or install another browser entirely such as Opera.

Standard users could still download something like FirefoxPortable or install Firefox to their home directory and get around the lockdown that way.

English is not my native language & i can’t believe that a forum administrator does not understand this thing. Does that one word [Remove] make any sense
It could be better if you read the topic title first.

I am sorry that i did not interpret my thoughts properly at this forum. :|

btw, Petri forum guys are damn professional towards IT solutions :-P I like it. ;-)

I am the one and only local Administrator & other people are just Users. Yes you are right they might use portable browser software to access block websites.

ISA/TMG also does not protect everything.
They can also use proxy sites to view blocked content :-D

    All,
This thread is in danger of becoming a flame-fest

I’m glad the problem has been solved to the OPs satisfaction and I suggest that further posts are purely on technical issues.

A BIG suggestion for your next thread:

Please explain in detail the WHOLE SCENARIO. A lot of confusion and time could have been avoided if the whole scenario was described in the first post.
