    Afternoon all,

I am after a little more advice please.

I am planning on doing a swing migration with our current exchange 2003 to another exchange 2003 server and I have been reading the below guide which is very useful but I have a few questions on the smart host side of things.

The new server is built and all patched up the same as the old one but I haven’t installed exchange yet.

    http://exchange.sembee.info/2003/migration/swing-migration.asp

We forward all our email to a St Barnard spam filter as below.

I have read the bit in the guide about “smart hose configuration” do I need to remove my current spam filter setting before mail will flow between the two exchange servers?

Below is my a pic of our current smtp connections.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Many thanks!

If the smart host is on an SMTP Connector then you do not have to do anything other than add the new server to the Connector.

If the smart host is on the SMTP Virtual Server then it must be removed.

    Thanks very much Simon!

Your info has been very helpful and your help is appreciated!

We haven’t got a virtual server setup so we should be all good!

    Cheers,
    Simon

Yes, you have. I am not referring to virtual server in the context of VMWARE, HyperV etc, I am referring to the SMTP Virtual Server inside Exchange ESM.

    Sorry.

So I will need to remove the “main SMTP connector” in ESM before I setup the new exchange server for mail to flow between the two servers?

Where do I then setup the “email filter” as before? Under the new email server?

    Thanks,
    Simon

No, you don’t have to remove your current SMTP connector as Sembee already mentioned, just add your new Exchange server to the listed Bridgeheads..

Mail flow between your two Exchange servers are not influenced by this SMTP connector, Exchange handles this internally.

As long as you haven’t configured a smarthost on the virtual SMTP server and communication on port 25 between the two Exchange servers is working the mail flow between this servers will work.

    Hi Both,

    Sorry for appearing dumb!

I have setup the new server and ran some tests and mail is flowing ok between the two servers with the smart host removed.

    Thanks for your help!
