I am planning to migrate from Exchange 2000 to 2003. Is it a painful (long process) or is it relatively easy? What do I need to know or be prepared for?
    Thank you

It isn’t an overly long process, but you cannot do it in 10 minutes.
I usually suggest three weeks. Take your time and most of it can be done in production hours.

The major problem is the replication of public and system folders. This is very conservative so needs to be given time. You cannot move the mailboxes across before the public and system folders have replicated otherwise you will see performance issues.

My guide on the process is here: http://www.amset.info/exchange/migration.asp
I think Daniel has a guide on the process as well.

Thank you so much for your reply.
I am upgrading the same machine. It’s runing Exchange 2000 now and I am planing to install 2003 on it.
In your answer you said it will take about 3 weeks.
While I am doing the upgrade will the exchange be down ?

I don’t do in place upgrades for any reason whatsoever.
That isn’t really a migration, but an upgrade. A migration is going to a new server. If you had said that you were planning to in place upgrade then I would have given you different advice… specifically… don’t do it.

You don’t recomend to upgrade ?
You think I should just get a new server and migrate everything to it ?

If you have a server that can take Windows 2003/Exchange 2003 then you would be better off moving Exchange to that.
If you want to use the existing server then you could do a full swing migration, would basically means moving to another machine as a temporary server, then rebuilding the original server then moving everything back.
