Purchase a new HDD or find a known good HDD and restore important data from backup.

Have you tried accessing the files in DOS? Just in case they are visible so you could attempt to copy them off.

    Open up command prompt.

At the first prompt, type k:

Type: dir – see if the folders and files are listed.

Otherwise, you could try running the chkdsk switch. See if it will scan it for errors, if it can be detected.

:google: Data Recovery software and see what it brings up.

    WHOA!! Careful with CHKDSK!!!!

On disks bigger than a certain size, running CHKDSK will trash all your security descriptors. You will have to re-apply all permissions.

Fair enough. May be a last resort then elagal.

I have often used chkdsk /restore when repairing XP using the recovery console in the past and have found it effective when I have had a BSOD and there was nothing left to do.

I think permissions are the last of his worries at this stage Tom.
He can still use Chkdsk on a read only mode to see what the damage is and then decide on a course of action.

If you can’t access the drive then you may not be able to recover your data. Some apps i have used:

R-Studio – http://www.r-studio.com/ – Trial version with limitations. Full version not cheap
    Undelete – http://www.undelete.com/ – 30 Day trial version
Can’t think of the last ne right now.

However if this unbacked up important data is really important I would seriously consider taking it to a data recover professional as it is very easy to loses everything, especially on a faulty drive.

You need to decide how much money your data is worth.
