    I am curious if I archive email from a users mailbox is that white space instantly reclaimed after my online defrag runs? Or is that email considered “deleted” and not cleared out until it hits my deleted item retention period?

    No. If you want to reclaim space you have to do an offline defrag.

    I am not looking to reclaim disc space (typically what an offline defrag is used for) I am looking to reclaim white space

    Failing that you can always create a new DB, move the mailboxes and delete the old DB which of course means no down time.
