We are currently running v centre on a physical box that I would like to virtualize. I only have one vcentre, do I go about this the same way I would any server?

should I do a backup prior to virtualizing? Whats the recommended steps to backup?

I’ve never done this, but you should be able to use vCenter Converter using one of your ESXi hosts as the destination.

You are heading in the right direction, Use the convertor to move it into virtual space.

Afterward just remove any software and drivers that were installed for the physical box such as raid controller software, hard monitoring drivers etc on the new vm as they would only be taking up resources no longer required.

inside the VM, open a command line and type:

    set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
    start devmgmt.msc

when the device manager opens, click view click, show hidden devices,

    remove all shadowed drivers.

    reboot when done.

voila.. clean, vm with virtual centre!
