I’ve got Virtual PC 2007. I’ve successfully created a VM and installed Windows Server 2003 using a CD.

Then I wanted to create another VM and install Windows XP on that but have not been as lucky. I can’t get it to install from either a CD or an .iso file

    Am I doing something wrong?

I’m new to this Virtual PC thing.

Release the CD from the First VM.
Capture the CD for the Second VM.
Have you installed Virtual Machine Additions?

    Corrupt ISO / CD?
Where exactly are they both from?
How far does it get in the install process before it fails?

@biggles77 I did release the CD from the first VM and added the CD for XP to the second VM. And no I haven’t installed additions yet.

@ossian I’ve used the iso/cd to install before without any problems. I don’t even get anywhere, it just doesn’t load.

What error message do you get? (a screenshot would be gr8… )
What is your boot order in VM’s BIOS?

Re: Can’t install WinXP on Virtual PC

I don’t even get an error message. I just get this screen

    virtualpc.jpg

Then after a couple of minutes it just goes back to the main screen:

    virtualpc2.jpg

The boot order is floppy, cd, harddrive. I’ve changed it to cd first but made no difference

I tried to see if I could install win server again but that doesn’t even load anymore. My CD starts up, you can hear it spinning but it does not load.

Have you mounted the CD/ISO in the VM?
    Reinstall Virtual PC?

This is usually a sign that the disk is not bootable (or at least the VPC does not recognize it as such). This can be as a result of some miss-configuration.
Can you please post a screenshot of your VM’s settings? Are you sure the CD is mapped to the physical device?

Re: Can’t install WinXP on Virtual PC

@sorinso I’m sure the CD is mapped to the physical drive as I successfully installed Win Server 2003 using a CD, it’s just not working for XP. Both from the CD or direct from the .iso file.

@biggles77 and @ossian if I reinstall do I lose the Win Server 2003 VM already successfully installed?

Re: Can’t install WinXP on Virtual PC

You successfully installed Server 2003 on a VM. Now you have problems installing XP on another VM. This can be due:
    – miss-configuration of this machine;
    – problem with the CDISO file.

Where did you get the XP CD from? Burnt from the same ISO file? Or is the ISO file image of the same CD? If you answer YES to one of these questions, then if there’s a problem with the one, it’s on the other one too.
I would suggest to get another XP installation CD and try again…

Yep think I might have a problem with the actual iso file then, I found my old official xp disc and that works fine. I downloaded the file from MSDN. I can open the iso file using winrar and load the exe file fine.

But I’ve finally got the XP install going.

    Thanks guys

Cool , I am glad you solved the problem.

Just remember that that does not mean you can boot from it.

Thank you for coming back with the outcome.
