As you move your SQL Server systems to the cloud your backup capabilities change from what they were on-premise. You might also want to consider moving away from your older legacy backup method to cloud-based backups. Released this past March of 2019, Azure Backup for SQL Server Virtual Machines allows you to implement cloud-native backups for your SQL Server VMs.
Azure Backup for SQL Server Virtual Machines is an enterprise scale, zero-infrastructure solution that enables you to centrally manage and monitor the backup for your SQL Server Azure VMs. Microsoft states Azure Backup for SQL Server Virtual Machines can provide 15-minute Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) by scheduling logs backups for every 15 minutes. It also provides one-click, point-in-time database restores without the need to apply a chain of log backups, differential backups and full backups.
