  • VBScript to enable Quick Launch toolbar and create shortcuts?

    Hello all,

    I have been searching for a while now of a way to:

    1. Enable the Quick Launch Bar (via VBS)
    2. Delete all the existing links
    3. Create my own links

    However there seems to be so many different ways just to enable the Quick Launch bar that i am confused which one to use. Any advice or suggestions?

    Thanks a lot

    Which ones have you tried? Presumably none of them worked for you?

    Regarding the icons shown, these are shortcuts stored in the user's profile - Google will tell you where. Just delete the existing files and then copy your own there, or create new shortcuts there.

    "For by now I could have stretched out my hand and struck you and your people with a plague that would have wiped you off the Earth." (Exodus 9:15) - I could kill you with my thumb.

    "Everything that lives and moves will be food for you." (Genesis 9:3) - For every animal you don't eat, I'm going to eat three.

      I looked at this and did a bit of research on it and it appears that this is rather difficult to do.

      Read this and you'll understand why. It's not impossible though.

        Thanks for the replies.

        @gforceindustries i have been looking through various attempts (most from the msfn forums). So far the best i have is:

        Code:
        Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

        ;enable quick-launch bar near start-menu

        Which isnt very pretty (!) and seems to need explorer.exe to be restarted and so since i will be runbing this as a login script i dont know whether it will actually work.

        Im not too woried about deleting / creating the shortcuts - its just enabling this bar!

        @ahinson - yep im starting to agree its ridicolously difficult for what it is! I thought i could google the answer to this and disabling the language bar in 20 minutes - not the case!

        Any ideas then?

          Re: VBScript to enable Quick Launch toolbar and create shortcuts?

          Does it have to be done via VBScript? I'd opt for doing it via GPO (to enable the toolbar).

            Not at all GPO would be great. Is there / where is the setting?

                    Re: VBScript to enable Quick Launch toolbar and create shortcuts?

                    You mean:

                    "After a long serach I found it.

                    User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar ->"

                    Couldn't find a thing...

                      That policy is for Vista, it does not apply to WinXP.

                      using GPO:
                      Unfortunately a custom ADM file does not support REG_BINARY values. However what you can do is deploying "Group Policy Preference Client Side Extensions for Windows XP (KB943729)". Then you can use the 'Registry modifications' preference.

                      Else,, you could use a startup script instead:
                      Create a reference PC (Windows XP). Set the Quick Launch Toolbar. Then Logoff and on one time before running the script below.
                      The script will create a new batch file that you can run from a GPO as a Computer Startup Script, linked to the OU where the XP machines objects are.
                      Code:
                      :: Run this batch on a pre-Configured Windows XP computer
                      :: (Make sure that you've Logged-off and -on one time
                      ::  before running this script)
                      :: This script will create a Computer Startup script that you can
                      :: run via GPO - "Computer Configuration"

                      @echo off
                      Set "$file=XPStartUpScript.cmd"
                      > "%$file%" (
                         echo.:: Windows XP Computer Startup Script
