  • User actioned defrag.

We have around 500 machines. Most of our users do not have administrative rights. I would like to put a "defrag" icon on everyones desktop for them to manually start a defrag on the %systemroot% (99% of time it will be c:\).

    Limitations.

    • Users who do not have administrative rights need to be able to run this as well as users with administrative rights.
    • There needs to be a front end of some sort, even if it is only a CMD window saying *****defragmentation in process, please do not close this window*****.
    • We cannot visit large amounts of machines to make any changes.

Also any ideas on sending this shortcut out to the "All Users/Desktop" folder would be great.

    Hi,

I would personally adapt this approach:
Create a Bat file with the defrag.exe comand

    Something simple like

    Code:
    @ECHO OFF
    START defrag.exe c: -f
Assign it as a shutdown script in a GPO.

Thanks for your response. Few issues I have with adopting that approach.

      • That batch would not work if the user didn't have administrative rights.
      • Defrag on every shutdown? That would increase our energy usage and potentially dramatically reduce the lifetime of our disks.

Ever thought of investing in Diskeeper???

Should do something like this for you.

The batch should work for non admin because it's a shutdown script.
For your second concern, I only leave the script running for about a week and that is sufficent for all my clients.
Energy usage/dramatically reduce the Disc lifetime
If you are worried about that then you can extend the script with SChtasks and schedule it to run once a week/month.
