  • VM memory CPU issues?

We have 8 hosts and about 50 servers for various functions between them. The past 2 days random ones on different hosts will show an alarm Virtual Machine CPU usage. Most of the times the servers were too stalled to login to and had to be powered off and back on and then they are fine. After getting into them I cannot find anything in the logs to suggest the cause. Its happened to 5 separate non related servers in the past few days. Is there a VMware related common problem I am missing?

When you say the servers, you mean the guests correct? Is there any correlation between the affected guests? Recent update/ software install? You say most were to far gone to log in. Were you able to log in to one and troubleshoot?

what version of esx are you running?

What's your ratio pCPU to vCPU?
How many vCPUs do the VM that stalled have allocated?
Also pls detail your setup a bit more

Yes Sorry I mean guests, the terminology throws me off. The CPUs assigned vary to the guest so between the ones having the problem its not a constant number. For example I have 2 guests running ADFS server 1 hasn't yet had a problem, server 2 has even after a reboot goes right up to 100%CPU

Another thing that happened and I can't track down why. I had 2 alarming high CPU this morning. I rebooted one and the other showed green for a min then went back to High CPU alarm. They are on different hosts and now 2 different SANs

What process is using all the CPU on the guest?

Are VMware Tools on these virtual machines installed and up to date?

Can you bring the VM's up one by one to narrow down the point to which "something" is causing the issue?
