  • Running VMWare Esxi 5.5 from USB

    Hi,

Ive read various opinions about installing and running VMware from a pen drive as opposed to running it from a HDD local on the server. Obviously the cost benefits are massive running it from a USB pen drive but there are concerns with reliability etc.

Has anyone got it running on a USB drive in a production environment? If so what make and model of pen drive are you using? Im aware that you need to redirect your logs to another device which isn't an issue and I was thinking just replicate the install of VMware on to a duplicate(s) pen drive for resilience\backup.

Any suggestions please? Thanks as always

I've had it on a test bed with a generic USB key.

In our production environment we have numerous servers running with Dell 2GB SD cards and it runs perfectly fine.

Everything you always wanted to know about installing ESXi 5.x on a USB or SD disk is in this VMware KB:
      http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/mic...rnalId=2004784

Not that ESXi 5.x runs completely in memory.

Thanks guys, Ive got it working and even managed to copy\backup my USB installation using clonezilla.

My next question is, I initially made my ESXi host boot from a 4GB USB drive and have since migrated the config using clonezilla to a 32GB drive. As before Im getting the error system logs on host are stored on non-persistent storage.

Now I know why this message is coming up but - firstly as I am using the full 32GB on the USB drive (how do I find out if I am or not?) and secondly am I ok to point the logs to the USB pen drive or is this a no no?

        Thanks
