    Can I implement Vmware ESXI active & standby cluster with out using SAN?

    You don't strictly need a SAN, but you do need some kind of shared storage that all the Vmware hosts can access. This could be a NAS or iSCSI target. You could use Openfiler running on a server with network access to it for example.

    The latest version of vSphere apparently takes away that requirement though under certain conditions:

    There are a lot of configurations that "will work", but you dont necessarily want to do most of them.

      So you want to setup a HA cluster, I'd suggest having a read of this (for v5.1)
