  • Port mirroring using vmware

I have vmware exi 4.1 in place.
there are machines all having windows OS
i want to do a port mirroring on some specific OS, which will send the data/ traffic to a particular guest system which will then do the analysis of the packets from those systems.

Is it possible to do on vmware or if there is any software which i can install on the guest systems to mirror the traffic and send it to a specific system for further analysis.

You need ESXi 5 and a distributed vSwitch for this to be possible through the virtualisation layer.

      Thank you scott28tt.
Could you also let me know where can I download the distributed vSwitch and the steps to do it further.

Also how can I have only one specific guest system on esxi to have the traffic from the mirrored port?

If you only have 4.1 you can't do this in ESX, even with a distributed vSwitch.

There is no "download" for the distributed vSwitch, the capability is part of ESX and vCenter Server, but you'll need an Enterprise Plus license to add any of your hosts to use it.
