  • Move VMWare machine to a AMD 64 bits multiprocessor

Hello, I'd like to ask a question:

I have moved a WMWare Workstation machine which was created in a 32-bit uniprocessor Intel, to a different hardware: AMD 64 bits, multiproccesor.

Also, the machine was created in VMWare Workstation 7 and now I got it into Workstation 8, although I think this shouldn't be a problem.

I have read somewhere that from AMD to Intel no issues are involved.

In my case, a message appears when I power up the virtual machine in the destination physical host (AMD 64 bits, 2 microprocessors):
"THE VENDOR OF THE PROCESSOR IN THIS VIRTUAL MACHINE IS NOT THE SAME AS THE VENDOR OF THE PROCESSORS IN THE MACHINE ON WHICH THE VIRTUAL MACHINE STATE WAS SAVED. You may attempt to resume this virtual machine , but doing so may result in unpredictable behaviour."

    Many thanks in advance!

    Its just a warning.

Does it actually power up correctly??

Thanks wullieb1 for your prompt reply!

Yes, the machine actually powers up, but you asked "properly" and I don't know what to say about that. Apparently so. I guess I'll say better over time.

So, you think it is just a warning, nothing to be worried about?

Why then does it appear?. I mean: If there is no issue in moving a machine which were in a Intel 32 bits into a AMd 64 bits , why did they create that warning? Just out of curiosity.

      Thanks a lot!

Thye'll just be warning you in the event that there is an issue when you move over.

          I see. Thanks again.

So, just to check if I got it right:

is there no problem in moving a vm machine that was created in a host that is AMD processor into a intel-based host , or vice versa ? .

I didn't get what you hinted by "move over" . Sometimes my English is not that high, sorry about it.

          THANKS A LOT!

When you switched from your Intel CPU to AMD.

I must be really clumsy. I don't get what you say.

Anyway: Thanks a lot just the same!!

                ???

You moved the VM from a PC that was running with an Intel CPU to a PC that is running an AMD CPU.

                  That's it.

                  In short:

is there no problem in moving a vm machine that was created in a host that is AMD processor into an intel-based host , or vice versa ? .

Re: Move VMWare machine to a AMD 64 bits multiprocessor

i have a vague memory of, when building VMs a few years back, I think we could use a larger vmware tools package, that allowed it to move between processors frmo different familes.

obviously, you coulnd't move an x64 guest to an x32 hypervisor..

                      Thanks techcamel ,

Apparently, from what I understood in this thread, there is no issue, but I thought it was.

If those tools existed a while ago, they must be still in the VMWare products, probably with enhacements!! . Do you remember the name of the tools?

                      Thanks again!

                        the integration tools

when you install the guest, you can then choose an option to install integration tools

                          Its VMware Tools.

                          Integration Tools is Hyper-V
