  • Help with Storage/datastore

I have a vcenter server 4.0, and my datastore is out of space. I need to clone a power down vm but have no space for the clone. I won't be using vmotion or vstorage. I have a extra server. How can I use that server as a datastore for my vcenter? if that is possible, how should I go about doing it? I planned on migrating the clone to another esxi server I had setup.

    Thanks.

vCenter is a management component. What version of vSphere are you running on the host? vSphere 4?

You could set up the other server as an iSCSI target and add it as a datastore.

is this a physical server that you could install OpenFiler, or similar, on??

You also have the alternative of mounting an NFS data store, if you enable your server with an NFS share.

You can mount this NFS share on both hosts, so moving between them is no issue.

Note: This is only a temporary solution, I do not recommend you running production VM's on the NFS share.

Is it better to use SSD for ESX storage and SAN for vms?

Is there any alternative for iSCSI other than openfiler?

Nexenta has a Community edition - which is free or you could also build your own solution based on ZFS.

Tutorial can be found here (Shameless Plug...)

Microsoft iSCSI Target 3.3 is also available for free:
                  http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=19867

Obviously it's not open source runs on Windows only.
