    I figured out a work around:

    Step1:
    Create snapshot - Recommendation

    Step2:
    Remove VM from inventory

    Step3:
    Browse to VM:
    cd /vmfs/volumes/DATASTORE_NAME/HOSTNAME

    Step4:
    Create backup of vmx file:
    cp HOSTNAME.vmx HOSTNAME.vmx.old

    Step5:
    Remove the lines:
    ethernetN.generatedAddress
    ethernetN.addressType
    ethernetN.generatedAddressOffset

    Step6:
    Add the below lines to the VMX file:
    ethernetX.checkMACAddress = “false”
    ethernetX.addressType = “static”
    ethernetX.Address = “XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX

    Step7:
    If all is working - remove snapshot

      Can I ask why you'd want to do that?

      The most common scenario is a P2V when you have application software licensed to the MAC address of the NIC in the old physical box.

      If that's not the reason, what is?
