  • ESXi5 LAN speed issue

When I first installed ESXi5 I had 100mb switches. I replaced all the switches in my server rack with GB and all VMs and non VMs show they are connected at 1GB. I downloaded a free lan speed tool to see exactly how fast my lan speed was and I noticed something strange. The speed test to my non VM server was near GB speeds but when I test all my VMs I am only getting 100mb speeds.

I noticed within vSphere client configuration tab that its only showing 100mb full duplex. I selected the vmnic0 and chose to edit the properties and changed the configuration speed to 1000mb full duplex. This change dropped all my vms off line and when I checked on the the physical server I noticed the NIC had no activity lights. I scrambled to figure out how to correct this and finally had to use another NIC port on the physical server to get my VMs back on the network. I still show 100bm speed on vmnic1 and am still getting 100mb speeds on the lan test I run.

This brings up two qustions for me:

    1. Why did my first nic stop working when I changed the speed within vSphere and how do I get it to function again?

    2. How do I get GB speeds to my VMs.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Configure your vmnic0 to autodetect will usually do the trick.
