Which VMware vSphere version are you using?
Is er enough space on the datastore where the VMs are located?

Re: vmware keep creating consolidate helper snapshot

      What is creating the snapshots???

Is there a reason it is not clearing the snaps??

Please remember that snaps are not a proper backup strategy.

a: the snapshots created by itself without our knowledge, i just realized after reviewing the vm space.
we're running backup exec to backup the server. now the problem is snapshots being created and just left without delete it..

a: we are running vSphere client 4.1.0(build491557), vCenter Server 4.1.0(build 258902).
currently overall space available - 20%

bytheway, we've others vm which running ok without creating snapshots and only fews vm that creating the snapshots. how to figure out the root cause? is it related to symantec backup exec?

        error:
"unable to access file <unspecified filename > since it is locked"

Re: vmware keep creating consolidate helper snapshot

Try a solo run of backup exec to see if it is that that is creating the snaps firstly.

If it is we can then narrow it down to a specific application and we can debug from there.

          Also have read at this

          http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/mic...rnalId=1003302

Looks like this is what Marcel was talking about.

yes, i managed to delete all the snapshots online.
but, the consolidate helper snapshot created after backup performed.

if space the concern, others vms shared the same datastore/storage does not facing the same issue.

            what i've done;
1-install backup remote agent onto the vm
            2-give administrator permission to vm

Re: vmware keep creating consolidate helper snapshot

How are your backup jobs configured??

From what i'm reading there is some issue with your backup software not being able to correctly delete the snapshot it has created and hence the consolidate helper snapshot is created.

Are you backup jobs completing succesfully??

What exactly are you backing up?? I.e full vm including vmdk files or the files inside the vm?

What OS version are you running??

Is backup exec up to date??

Re: vmware keep creating consolidate helper snapshot

                hi,
i've found a solution for my issue.

                the root cause of the failure;
1- i've cloning the VM instead of deploying the template to VM.
2- in this case, when backup is running, vmware unable to remove snapshots and consolidate-helper-0 snapshots being created for each backup session. (uncommitted snapshot to base vmdk)

                the solution for this issue.
** the following procedure to have vCenter Server / ESX properly show the Snapshots on the virtual machine and commit them to the Base VMDK file.

                1-verify vmdk for hdisk1
Note if this is the Base VMDK for or a Snapshot VMDK file.
i.Base VMDK files are the filename.vmdk and filename_#.vmdk file.
ii.Snapshot VMDK files are the filename-######.vmdk files.
iii.note which LUN hdisk1 resides on, this will contain the vmx file.
                2-power off vm
                3-remove vm from inventory
                4-add vm to vCenter Inventory
(right click vmx file and select add to inventory)
                5-using snapshots manager
a.if any snapshots appear, select the top snapshot - click Delete All
                6-create a test snapshot
a.don't quiesce the OS, wait until complete
                7-using snapshots manager
a.select the current snapshot - click Delete All
                8-edit vm setting
a.review path of hdisk1 vmdk file (this will be the base vmdk)
                9-power on vm
10-browse datastore and folder where the vm resides on
                i. sort by type and look for snapshot file type - (vmsn)
                a. select all and Delete
ii. sort by type and look for virtual disk
                a. select the -#####.vmdk files and delete them
                b. these are the vmdk for snapshots
                c. keep the base vmdk file listed in VM settings you reviewed earlier (Note: the vmdk files cannot be deleted if they are in use by the VM)

I've try to initiate backup and no more consolidate-helper-0 snapshots being created.
