  • VMWare Storage Question

I am very new to VMWare and had a question about storage. I have 2 2TB drives that I will raid 1 for my data store. I want to move an old win03 server over to my vm server but it has a few drives installed in it. I want to install the OS on 15-20 GBs but how can I store all the data from the other drives to my data store and be able to access from the OS.

My question is how can I access data from my data store from my VMs??

You may want to use VMware Converter (free product) to do what we call a P2V (Physical 2 Virtual ) conversion. Select all the disks of the source server and they will be converted to virtual disks on the target VMware server.

Note after conversion, you should definitely clean up your new virtual machine and remove any 'ghost' and un-necessary drivers, agents, and software. This clean up will heavily increase virtual machine stability and availability.

      Thx for your reply Pironet!

I am familiar with the free converting software but I really did not want to create a VM that was 1TB. Let me explain my scenario a little better:

      03 server
      - 300GB with OS and some programs installed
      - 1TB drive that acts as file server

I want to convert the drive with OS but not include the 1TB drive. I would like to move the files from the 1TB drive to the data store and have them accessible from the VM installed on the data store. Is this possible?

You cannot have your OS disk converted as a VM and still access your second 1TB disk the physical box as is. Some how the second 1TB disk will have to be 'converted' as well.

        I see several options here:
1- copy the content of the 1TB disk to a NAS (you will have to recreate shares and permissions manually or eventually with a tool...). This is doable only if you access your data through shares of course....

2- P2V the 1TB disk to a VMDK or eventually to a RDM disk which in both cases will be attached to the new VM. I understand that you don't want that...

3- Put the 1TB disk in a case, attach it to the VMware host eventually and access it through virtual USB within the VM. That sounds tricky and dirty to me but that may work...

maybe there are other options but I can't figure out any at the moment.
