  • Disks and Raid Best Practice ?

    Hi,

What is the best practice for instaling ESX 5 (Licensed) on Dell R610 regarding Local storage (local disks) and Raid ?

Which Disks will be faster and more compatible with ESX: Sas or Sata ?
Which Raid will be faster and more compatible with ESX: Raid1 or Raid5 ?

    Thanks

If the only thing going on the server is ESXi itself then the disks and RAID setup really isn't of any great significance. That changes if you're placing VMs on the local disks too, then you need to think in the same way as you would physically.

Maybe this will help with the RAID setup.

As for the disks, what disks are you thinking of buying???

From memory, and its a bit vaque lol, your SAS disks will be quicker that SATA but it all depends on the disks that you buy.

        Any update on this?

As stated, you need to analyse what you need.

A lot of people just buy equipment without actually profiling their requirements.

You need to see what IOPS you need, there is a big difference in SATA vs SAS performance, but it also depends on what RAID you use.

        Good luck.
