    Re: can't create linux on ESX3 server due to pending formating

    I feel so tension
    when I login the esx server use the command "fdisk -l" it show me that all of the devices is unknow I think that is why I can't format the disk
    But the new question is how can I to solve it

    Disk /dev/sdd: 1979.1 GB, 1979120929792 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 240614 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

    Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdd1 * 1 240614 1932731923+ fb Unknown

    Disk /dev/sde: 2019.5 GB, 2019540598784 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 245528 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

    Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sde1 * 1 245528 1972203628+ fb Unknown

      have you used the ESX console (web interface) to create datastores?

        What is the size of your LUN?

        How big of a disk are you attaching to the Linux VM?

        What kind of vmdk is it?

        Does your ESX see the LUN correctly as an attached volume?

          I'm not 100% sure what it is you are trying to do, but the fdisk commands you are running in the ESX command-line interface (Service Console) are showing you your VMFS partitions. You can tell that from the "fb" code which is why the filesystem reports as "unknown" as the fdisk tool doesn't understand that code as a recognised Linux filesystem - it's not supposed to by the way so that all looks fine to me.

          if you are trying to create a VM to install a Linux server inside, use the VI Client connected to your ESX host (or VirtualCenter server if you have one of those), create a VM on one of your VMFS datastores, and install your Linux OS inside the VM.
