  • How can I create a VMware machine from a Norton Ghost 2003 (old, DOS based) backup?

The operating system was Windows XP Professional with SP2 Italian. Unfortunatelly the base machine is dead because of an electrical failure (hard disk is dead). Before it went wrong we made a backup file with Norton Ghost 2003. Now we need to make the machine functional at least for a while.

I thought virtualisation is the answer, but I am not so sure now.((

    I tried some ways.
At first I have installed VMware Workstation 6.5, VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.3.0-build 292238.

    First try:
Although vCenter Converter sais it supports Norton Ghost, the program can not convert backups with .gho extension ("Convert Machine").

    Second try:
I have made a new virtual machine, and in the virtual environment I made a Norton Ghost image restore into the newly created virtual machine. (Without conversion it booted up with blue screen of course.)

Then I tried to make a "Configure Machine" with VMware vCenter. I download the sysprep cab from MS and started the conversion, but it said: "Running" and freezed my computer immediatelly.

    Third try:
Ok, I know vCenter likes .tib format (Acronis). I made a new physical disk from .gho image and made a new, .tib image with Acronis v12. Then vCenter Convert Machine said: "The source parameters are invalid"

    Any hints?

    Thanx in advace!

Do the second try, boot in safe mode, remove all drivers and install the vmware tools. Then reboot and see if it helps..

I found a link that converts the GHO file to a VMDK file.

      Link: http://www.symantec.com/connect/arti...k-and-vmdk-gho

Once you copy it I would recommend taking Dumber's advice and delete all the drives from the system and install VMTools.

      Hope it helps!
