  • copying vmdk files from san etc

    Hi,

I could do with some assistance from everyone here. I have a vm exchange server with several large drives one 400gb one 200 and I want to find the best way of copying them. I appreciate it will have to be turned off... I have read that a tunnelier or datastore browse is ok ish but will slow to a stop after about 80gb I have heard of veeam fastscp but ihave read it can't be used if ssh is enabled and I think although not sure that it is...any advise or guidance would be greatfully needed and received !

your best option is probably to use something like Veeam FastSCP.
You will need SSH activated on the server for this to work.

If this is something that you're going to want to do on a regular basis, like it is in the context of backups, you might be better looking at Veeam Backup & Replication rather than their FastSCP - it will save your "copy" having to be full each time which for 600GB will make a huge difference, and it will be able to backup the VM whilst it's running.

Re: copying vmdk files from san etc

veeam won't "back it up" as such

It will back up the VMDK image - it won't truncate your logs, and do a proper "exchange-aware" backup.

It\s just like taking a ghost image, but live.

Here's a page on the Veeam site about Exchange backups:
