  • SAN based replication vs. 3rd party application replication for VMware ?

    Hi All,

I am investigating the of which one is the most preferable choice for DR environment ?
between SAN based replication technology or 3rd party application (Veeam Backup and replication or VMware Site Recovery mgr.)

my current situation is that I have running mostly virtual environment

production environment that is mixed of HP DL 380 and Blade servers with EMC Clariion CX4-500 FC-SAN
planning for DR environment that uses the same server model but still thinking of which SAN technology that we could use for the replication between the two sites ?

the DR site is not necessarily to be as fast as the current production and the SAN doesn't have to be EMC

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

We use VMware Site Recover Manager and it works extremely well. We use SAN replication (EMC Mirror View) and have two EMC CX4-240 SAN's and different sites. You need to ensure you have the required bandwith between the two sites for replication to take place.

thanks for the reply Michael, does 10 MB link is enough to replicate after we did the initial replication in site ?

Not too sure, depends on how much data your replicating and how frequent your replicating. We have the benefit of running dark fibre between our two sites so were only really limited to the F/C gbics in the back of the SAN which are currently 4gb.

You will have to perform some test to see how the 10m connection holds up.
