  • partition large virtual disk or make mutiple small virtual disk

I have a server that is running vmware server and using windows server 2008 as a host os. i need to set up two vitrual machines that will act as a file server and database server.

I have a RAID 5 with the host using 3 partions. one for host, one for file server, and one for the database server. I would like to know which is the best for proformace. Should I create a 1tb virtual disk and let the guest os set up three partition for the file server or should i create 3 small virtal disk and let the guest os use all the space on the 3 small virtual disk. the reason i need 3 partiton is due to a mapping app that is 500gb and we cannot back that up. so we need a partition for that because our backup software only backs up partitions.

the database server will be a p2v and I think it just has one partition

Disk Partitioning doesn't improve anything for performance.
They are still the same spindles.

However, the suggestion to separate system and data out into separate partitions is worth keeping in mind, since that means you can format the system volume and reinstall the OS at will without touching your data.

Naturally, good practice dictates that there is still no substitute for a backup before carrying out operations such as this.

I'm not saying if it's a good or bad practice, just saying that from a performance view creating partitions is useles.s
In his case I also would advice to look into ESXi instead of VMware Server but ok.
