  • Help adding virtual xp machine to virtual server 2003 AD

    Hi All,

I am a new member here at petri.co.il forums. I searched the forums before I started asking questions. I have laptop running windows 7 as my main OS. I have Vmware workstation 7 installed. I have 2 virtual machines Server 2003 with AD installed and Windows XP Pro. I have both VM's set to VMnet8 NAT. I am able to ping from the 2003 Server to Windows XP and vice versa but I am unable to add XP to the domain. I keep receiving this error--The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS. On the laptop there is no internet connection or router connected, it is all standalone. I'm currently using it this way to learn more about AD and also it's portable. I had it configured once before but I didn't write down what I did. What am I doing wrong? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Did you ping by IP or by name? Did you check to see if there's DNS listings in their network configurations?

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried to add the XP machine to the domain again and got this error message:

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain computerbusiness.local:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
      (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.computerbusiness.local

Common causes of this error include the following:

      - The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.

      - One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:

      computerbusiness.local
      local
      . (the root zone)

I am fairly new when it comes to Server 2003. Thanks for your time.

Sounds more like an AD issue..
Can you run a dcdiag on the DC?
