  • Can I install symanted backup exec onto a win xp worktation to backup a esx guest?

Am I able to install symantec Backup Exec 2010 onto a Windows XP workstation that has vsphere on it in order to backup a windows guest on an esx server?

Or do I have to install backup exec onto a server edition of windows?

    Thank You

ok - first question, are you trying to backup the Virtual Guest the same way you would back up a normal physical host, or are you trying to create a "snapshot" style backup of the virtual guest?

next question: What does the Backup Exec 2010 system requirements say - does it say it can run on a Windows XP system?

these answers make a difference to how I can respond to your question. The aim is important.

I am trying to create a snapshot.

The sys requirements mention server and xp under different categories, so I am not sure which one:

Ok - IIRC, it's not enough to just have vCentre - you must have the ESX 'agent' for Backup Exec as well.

Personally, I've found vRanger to be very good for creating snapshot style backups of ESX virtual guests.

so from here, provided you have A) the ESX agent and B) the relevant requirements to run ?BEX on the XP computer and C) the relevant space and network infrastrcture to complete your backups you should be fine,

However, based on your link, it looks like the "server' functionality of BEX can't be installed under XP, only the client agents can be.
