  • Moving Image file location and retaining snapshots

    Hello,

I am new to the forum and vmware. I searched for "move image", but didn't come up with the answer I am looking for. Either this process is too easy for anyone to have posted to this forum or it is impossible. I hope it is the first.

    Virtualization Server- ESX 3.5

I was running out of room and moved one of my image folders to a different drive thinking that I could edit the settings and point to the new location, but I couldn't find where to change the existing image config file location. Then I created a new image hoping to point it during the initial configuration, but that didn't work either.

I have 9 snapshots on this image so that I can test using various implementations of the OS and software versions, so I really want to be able to retain the snapshots that are in the folder.

I have tried copying the contents of the original vmx file to the new one, but I get "a file was not found" error when trying to start the image.

Please let me know if you need any additional information.

    Thanks,
    Jess

the .vmx and .vmxf files are both text files. you can manually edit these to point to the appropriate locations.
