  • Server Monitoring VMware/Physical

    Hi,

Can anyone recommend an Enterprise Server/PC monitoring software.

We have a global estate of VMware 3.5/4 Hosts & Server 2003 Guests.

We also have some Physical HP Servers spread about the globe.

We are looking for a package to monitor the hardware and software and send alerts.

We are looking at Symantec Altiris currently but is there any other options at the same level?

    Cheers.

you could take a look at Nagios.
It's freeware, runs on linux/unix and has plugins for windows system.
Does automated alerting, and has a pretty page for managers to look at.

requires lots of manual configuration though

I second Mr.Camel's suggestion to use Nagios. Excellent solution, but be warned it isn't exactly off the shelf software. But unlike some software there's a massive amount of information in this regard and very active forums. (I can't help but mention again.. it's FREE!!)

      Cheers

yea, that's the downside to nagios. You'd need some linux command line experience, unless you get one of the add-in tools that can allow you to configure it all from a graphical interface.

It can store data in a MySQL database, so you can do trends and things too.
If you set it up with an email2sms gateway, then you can even have it email alerts to an sms number, coming through to your phone.

(SMS, Page, call it what you will)

Nagios is nice, but as said before unless you have or know a Linux guru it's not the easiest to configure.

Right now, my company is at a toss up between What's Up Gold and Solarwinds and leaning toward Solarwinds.
