  • vcenter server and ESX versions

hello friends, can you please answer these questions:

    1) What extra features we get in vCenter server Essentials when compared with vCenter server Standard?

    2) Is it possible to have some ESX servers upgraded to 4.0 from 3.5 in our infrastructure and some left at the same old ESX 3.5 level? Do they co-exist? If they co-exist, can we manage ESX 3.5 and ESX 4.0 servers with the same vCenter server 4.0?

    cheers

Quite the contrary you will get more features with the full version as opposed to Essentials.

    - In essentials you are limited to only 6 ESX CPU licenses
    - You cannot use linked mode with the essentials license.

Yes you can have a mixed cluster. It is not advised as a permanent solution though. In order to maintain the licenses for the 3.5 ESX hosts, you will need to have a separate license server (or host based license), they cannot be managed with the licensing mechanism of vCenter 4.x

The other you must look out for is the Hardware versions of the virtual Machines. ESX 3.5 cannot run VM's that are hardware version 7.
