Are these all going to be VMs? What do you mean by data?

        hi,

i want to create a raid 5 for store the vm (three or four)
and a raid 10 for store vmfs who contains exchange bdd and files like word excel.. + bdd sql

the server will be an hp proliant dl 380 g6 or dell r710 with esxi 4.

what is the best for virtualisation, dell server or hp, my question include the management of power shutdown and backup.

        thanks a lot

Both HP and Dell make fine servers. Whatever hardware platform you choose, be sure it's on the VMware ESXi 4 HCL. I'm not at all impressed with IBM servers and that's putting it as politely as I possibly can using my public voice.

What do you mean by power shutdown? Are you referring to the ESXi host hardware or the VMs? VM shutdown is handled by management software, typically vCenter or the vSphere Client (via the ESXi host). Host shutdown is also handled via vCenter or the vSphere Client at the hypervisor layer, in addition to the native OOB (out of band) management integrated in the host (HP iLO2 and Dell DRAC).

Backup method is not dependent on the hardware choice. Backup code talks to the hypervisor and management tools. The hypervisor and management tools abstract your hardware choice.
