  • VMware ESXi 4.0 password reset

I inherited a customer with VMware ESXi 4.0 server and they do not have the root password. The procedure for resetting the root password for VMware ESXi 3.0 does not work on 4.0. Is the procedure documented or is there a place where I can view an administrator's guide that would document this?

I found this KB article http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/mic...rnalId=1317898 but I do not see the Grub screen when I reboot the server so I am not sure at what point to press the space bar.

    Thanks,

when your ESX server boots, it should come up with a menu that allows you to select standard mode, troubleshooting mode etc

ESX4 def. does this. not sure about esxi..

I wish it had but no menu that I saw. There is an ESX splash screen and text flashing by as modules load. Then I have ay the command interface that let me customize (f2) for stop/restart (f12).

        check this link:
        http://communities.vmware.com/messag...5EDF8E48B9CF90
(it does reference back here, but anyway)

basically what it says is esxi doesn't have grub, so you'd need to do it the harder way, with a linux live cd, mounting the right partitions, etc..

The customer has their entire business running on this box in two VMs. If I use the method in the links to wipe the root password to blank (using a boot Linux), then I understand the authentication will fail and the VMs will not load if the root password is blank. What concerns me is what happens after this step.

If you are worried if the machines will be wiped - they should not

If you perform a repair install it will reset your root password to --blank--

It should not wipe your datastores

You will have to re-create the network settings of your ESX host, permissions (if there were) and re-add the machines back in tot he ESXi host

That is relatively simple - Browse datastore -> find VMX file -> Add to inventory
