  • Netwrok Configuration with Multiple Vlans on single Vswitch

    Hello All,

Let me first explain the scenario, could anyone help me understand the solution?

If I configure one Vswitch on ESX host, which has 10 vlans (say ID 11 till 19) and each vlan is configured to have VMs with different subnet with different subnet mask. Then the Vswitch is bound to 2 NICs(Teamed).

    My doubt is :
    1. What IP address should be assigned to NICs? (would we configure the VM to have multiple IPs?)
    OR
    2. Do we tunnel the Vlans via one of the Vlans (Say admin vlan)?
    OR
    3. Is there any specific way to achieve this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Regards,
    Nayak

The Portgroups do not have IP addresses they only pass on the network connectivity on to the VM. and the vm's do not need multiple IP's

    2. Do we tunnel the Vlans via one of the Vlans (Say admin vlan)?
You will have to have a switch that supports trunking the VLANS on the ports, and allow vlans 11-19 on these two ports. Each portgroup will have to be configured to be tagged for that VLAN

    3. Is there any specific way to achieve this?
    1. Make sure you can trunk the vlans on the ports and that your switches support VLANS.
    2. Create a vswitch with 2 NICS. (for example vmnic0,vmnic1)
    3. on that vSwitch - create 10 Virtual machine portgroups each a VLAN ID of their own (11-19)
    4. Put each VM in the appropriate VM Portgroup according to their VLAN.

I hope that was clear enough.
