organize vm

    hi all

    what is the differnet between
    vm infrastructre and esxi

    i am working with esxi 3.5
    how can i organize those vm
    like all vm will be in a specific domain

    all i can see is resource pool
    which did organize
    but as i show there are other
    and more appropriate ways

    You seem to have the terms slightly mixed up. The infrastructure client is what you use to manage your ESXi host. If you have multiple ESX hosts you can manage ALL of them from Virtual Center. The resource pool is for modifying "how" the physical hardware is utilized. When you say specific domain what do you mean "specifically"? Additionally remember ESXi is a scaled down version of the full ESX client and does have some limitations in comparison to the full enterprise product and what components you have purchased.

      i'm trying to understand what yo umean with regards to putting them in domains ?

      are you talking about an Active Directory domain, or a DNS domain, or something else all together ? (like a vmware HA domain)

        well i have 100 guests in the list
        isnt there is a way to put them
        in kind of Hierarchy
        like if i have 2 ad domains

          i guess i found my "problem"
          i have not installed vCenter server

          as i understand only with this component
          i can manage vm in hirercy

          am i right?

            See my original post. Sorry i used the old name for it VMware Virtual Centre which has now been renamed Vcentre Server. That allows you manage multiple ESX hosts and organise your VM's as you see fit.

                Thats because you are using the VI client to manage your VM's not Virtual centre..

                  hi all

                  so i have install a vcenter server
                  yet when i open the vmware infrastructure client
                  i cant see it the inventory
                  host and cluster
                  niether templates
                  there is no list option in the inventory tab

                      i didnt pay attention and just connect
                      again to the esx i have
                      now that you mentioned i connect to
                      the vcenter intself
                      and then add the esx
